The 'Rain Forest'

The 'rain forest' is located in the American Garden and is a natural woodland area where children (and adventurous adults!) can enjoy swinging from the rope and tyre swings, climbing the rope ladder (from a Naval ship) or just lazing in one of the hammocks. Guests say it reminds them of the 'Famous Five' books or even of 'Swallows and Amazons' - there is a lot to discover! Try climbing a tree or making your very own den.

Play Area

Our tailor-made wooden climbing frame with an eight foot look-out tower is a hit with children, while adults can enjoy the views from the top too. There's also a Little Tykes Wendy house and some sandpits for younger children. For adults and older children, we have an area of the lawns where you can play croquet, badminton, skittles, ball games and more - just choose what you want from the shed.

Nature Trail

Our grounds are full of wildlife, so if you are a keen bird and/or animal watcher, you will not be disappointed! Wildlife Wonders has produced a fascinating report for us, complete with photos, on the flora and fauna in our gardens which guests can use as a guide. If you are awake early (or up late), then you will hear our resident owls and perhaps the fox. Later in the day as the thermals improve, our resident buzzard will call to her young across the valley. Recently, she was spotted eating a slow worm on our drive! You will also hear the rhythmic knocking of the woodpecker, the spotted fly catcher can be seen nearer the Royal House and all sorts of ducks, frogs and other creatures can be found around the ponds.

Picnics

There are picnic benches by the pond, near the Lawn Apartment and in the play area, or for those who prefer eating in the wild, we supply picnic hampers and waterproof picnic blankets, so you can choose your own spot. You are welcome to help yourselves to the organic apples, strawberries, blackberries and redcurrants in the garden when they are in season - much tastier when freshly picked!
